17 Weeks

Well, here I am at 17 weeks pregnant:

After taking this picture, Steven said that I didn't look pregnant in it, so I stuck it out a bit in the next one to get a real "belly" shot:

Morning sickness for me seems to stick around for a while. The days are getting better, but I still feel all sick every night.

I've started to feel the baby move, which I'm super excited about. This is when I started to feel Aubrey move, but since I have an anterior placenta this time, the doctor warned me it might be a while. That is one of the few parts about pregnancy that I love.

We had another ultrasound that also was pretty sure that we are having another little GIRL!! If in any future ultrasounds it looks otherwise, I"ll update, but for now it is looking like Aubrey is going to be a big sister to a little sister. I'm thrilled. I think they will be good friends, I'm good at the whole girl thing, and all those clothes I bought that Steven rolled his eyes at will get some more use!

I was supposed to start progesterone shots this last week to help prevent another premature birth, but that did not happen. I'm definitely not normally the type to be political, but the American health care system is just terrible! A lot of time I wish I was still in Canada.

Basically, a drug company, Makena, took a shot that has been around for 50 years to help with premature birth, got approval to patent it from the FDA, and turned that shot from $20 a shot to $1500! So... approximately $30,000 for treatment. Here is a link if anybody is interested in reading about it (http://abcnews.go.com/Health/WomensHealth/price-preventing-premature-births-skyrockets-drug/story?id=13104588&page=3#.UDGrfZ6-x5Q).

So, I have already spent hours on the phone dealing with my insurance company, and the doctors to try and get this drug covered since it is one of the best shots I have at going full-term. The crazy thing is that the insurance we have through LinkedIn is about as good as you can get, so I can't even imagine the trouble that other women in my situation must be going through.

You can start treatment between 16 and 20 weeks, so we would appreciate any prayers that things get sorted out quickly before it is too late. I'm trying to just trust that everything will work out, but this situation definitely is hard.

Well... enough of my rant. I'm so excited for this little girl to join our family. Being a mother is worth all the pain and heartache it takes to get them here!

I feel like a stalker but my friend knows you and knows I just went through a similar pregnancy so sent me this link to see if I had any advice. I had to have progesterone for my second pregnancy due to my first being preterm and I was just barely pregnant when the whole Makena nightmare happened. However I just wanted to make sure you know that you can still get the progesterone shot compounded from special pharmacies and don't have to use Makena. I used progesterone from weeks 19-35, the shot and supplies (needles/syringes) were sent to my door and it cost only a little over $100 using the specialty pharmacy. The FDA approved for it to still be sold this way because of the price tag the pharmaceutical company put on it. I did end up paying for it out of pocket (only due to poor communication with the insurance company) but it was much better than using the $30,00 same thing. Anyway these pharmacies are all around the nation. I believe my friend said she knew you from BYU so if you are still in the provo/slc area I can give you a few pharmacies there but your dr should be able to get you information wherever you are. Approval on the Makena may take months and though it is better to start it later than not at all it is better to start now if you can. Plus I was against giving the pharmaceutical company that much money if there was another option just because of the ethics of the situation. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or I can help you with this in any way. Having a preemie is hard and I feel very strongly the progesterone was the only reason I carried my second to full term (barely but she was 37 weeks!). My email is megsmoot@yahoo.com if you have further questions.

Paige that is crazy!!!! I can't believe the price and the fact you might not go full term. Now I haven't read everything yet since this is the first time I have been on my computer in 3 months so I apologize for sounding misinformed... but how come you are at risk of premature labor again? When do you get to find out what you are having? I think it is another girl so Aubrey will have a fun little sister.

And congratulations for being pregnant!! Gian told me a while ago, but I haven't had internet or a working computer until just a few days ago. And you don't even look pregnant!! I don't know if that is a good thing or a bad thing to say! hahaha but in my book its good because it means your back wont hurt as much ahahha. Or at least that is what I would hope would happen for me! Good luck with all the insurance stuff and getting your shots!!
